Russel Ray writes thoughtful blogs every day. This recommendation to take a break is something that many of us should seriously consider. It is a beautiful sunny afternoon in Maryland and a good time to enjoy outdoor activities.

If you're a workaholic, take a break!

I've always been a workaholic. Although still a somewhat pejorative term, to me a workaholic is simply someone who is addicted to work, either out of necessity or because of a severe love of what s/he is doing. Workaholic is often applied to the self-employed who, out of sheer necessity, is working to make an honest living.

I'm at a point in my life where I consider myself a controlled workaholic, a term that, to the best of my knowledge, I coined in 1987.

A controlled workaholic? What the heck is that?

Simply put, it's a workaholic who has to plan his personal life to keep his business life from overrunning it. So in 1987, when I was forced to become 100% self-employed rather than relying on an employer to pay me a salary, I conscientiously decided to control my workaholism rather than letting it control me.

It works! So if you are a workaholic, or think you might be going in that direction due to what you have to do in this economy to merely survive, simply schedule time for yourself. You can schedule five minutes every hour, or ten minutes every two hours, or 15 minutes every three hours. You will be surprised at how refreshed you are.

I schedule five minutes every hour. I simply walk away from the computer for five minutes each hour and walk out to look at my garden, go play with Zoey the Cool Cat, or read a short article in the newspaper or a magazine.

Plan what you're going to do each day, each week, and each month to reach the rest of your 2010 goals, and I'd be willing to bet that you actually do reach them. Remember that even though this is the beginning of September, it's never to late to start planning. In fact, every day that you fail to plan puts you one day closer to your plan to fail.

On Saturday, September 11th, 2010, the American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States. Every individual should make it their duty to display the American flag on the ninth anniversary of one our country's worst tragedies. Please do this honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms. The American flag is the fabric of our country and together we can prevail. Take a moment to think back to how you felt on 9/11 and let those sentiments guide you.

Honestly, I think we as Americans should fly the flag year-round, but if you don't, then at least make it a priority on this day.

PS: My Flag is flying!

Checking Your Family and Home for Lead

This is a very good notice for families that live in homes built before 1978. Deteriorating lead paint may be a hazard and a serious health risk to the occupants of an older home. Every family should be aware of the risks.

*Get your children and home tested if you think your home has high levels of lead.*

*Just knowing that a home has lead-based paint may not tell you if there is a hazard.*

To reduce your child's exposure to lead, get your child checked, have your home tested (especially if your home has paint in poor condition and was built before 1978), and fix any hazards you may have.

Your Family

Children's blood lead levels tend to increase rapidly from 6 to 12 months of age, and tend to peak at 18 to 24 months of age.

Consult your doctor for advice on testing your children. A simple blood test can detect high levels of lead. Blood tests are important for:

Children at ages 1 and 2.

Children and other family members who have been exposed to high levels of lead.

Children who should be tested under your state or local health screening plan.

Your doctor can explain what the test results mean and if more testing will be needed.

Your Home

You can get your home checked in one of two ways, or both:

A paint inspection tells you the lead content of every different type of painted surface in your home. It won't tell you whether the paint is a hazard or how you should deal with it.

A risk assessment tells you if there are any sources of serious lead exposure (such as peeling paint and lead dust). It also tells you what actions to take to address these hazards.

Have qualified professionals do the work. There are standards in place for certifying lead-based paint professionals to ensure the work is done safely, reliably, and effectively. Contact the National Lead Information Center (NLIC) for a list of contacts in your area.

Trained professionals use a range of methods when checking your home, including:

Visual inspection of paint condition and location.

A portable x-ray fluorescence (XRF) machine.

Lab tests of paint samples.

Surface dust tests.

Note: Home test kits for lead are available, but studies suggest that they are not always accurate. Consumers should not rely on these tests before doing renovations or to assure safety.

As I walked around the summer cottage this weekend I was sadden by the lack of color in the gardens which is a result of the long hot summer days... The blue Hydrangea's are a mauve and brown...the black eye Susan's are crisp and black, long gone are the peony's....Flax's are at the end of their purple glory.

It is time to revitalize your gardents' with some hardy mums, asters, colorful Kale's.... So cut back the Lilly's be careful with hydrangea's they are not fond of cuttings - pull out the annuals....rake up the mulch...add some fall color...

It’s not just Coffee & Cakes for the Germans

I always enjoy reading blogs about good things to eat. Many of us would like to be sampling some of those cakes this morning. Life is good!

For all of us out there who don’t think twice before taking dainty sips from our tea cups or curling with a steaming mug of coffee in one hand and a good book in another, the long standing German tradition of Kafee und Kuchen might come as something of a surprise. To know that these beverages that we sip almost unmindfully could hold such a place of importance somewhere culturally was something of a revelation for me. By the time I finished reading about Kafee und Kuchen, the short break people take between lunch and dinner for a social gathering, I was more than fascinated; I had new-found respect for the cup of coffee and the simple looking cake lying in front of me.

While the English seem to rule the roost whenever we talk of cakes and desserts, various German cakes have received international renown. So, the next time you bite into a slice of the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte be sure to send up a silent prayer of thanks for the Germans. What? You’ve never eaten the the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte? Come on, sure you have, except you would probably know it as the Black Forest cake!

The Black Forest cake is something of an exception to the rule as far as German cakes go, since most cakes tend to be light, buttery and don’t drool with sickly, sugary sweetness. They are however topped with fresh fruit or served with cream, streusel or meringue. During the summers, it’s very common for cakes and tortes to be made from seasonal fruits, including gooseberries, strawberries, red currants, and blueberries. Yummmm.....

Interestingly, in Germany, cake is hardly every served as an after dinner dessert. A typical dessert would be ice cream, pudding, or stewed fruit and they are served in a bowl. I guess cakes are reserved for after-lunch gatherings with friends since they seem to complement friendly batter and get-togethers beautifully.
Along with their passion for cakes, Germans are also quite well known for their love of coffer, which arrived in the country in the 17th century. In fact, coffee houses became the hub of economic, political and cultural discussions and many an important men could be seen coming together around a table at the center of which stood a steaming pot of freshly brewed coffee.

Women were not allowed to enter coffee houses. However, since the fairer sex is accustomed to having its way anyway and don’t give up on the pleasures of life just because the society says so, women in Germany started organizing Kaffeekränzchen, or private coffee parties in their homes until they were given unrestricted access into coffeehouses in the 20th century. Smart gals!

Do you know what the German word is to describe weak coffee? It’s Blümchenkaffee which means “flower coffee.” The word comes from the fact that when you drink a cup of weak coffee, you can even see the flowers painted at the bottom of the cup. As you can tell for yourself, weak coffee was loathed by the Germans. But, the more important point to notice here is that coffee seems to have left an imprint on the Germans, not just traditionally, but also linguistically.

Please don't make your house HARD to show!

Good advice for home sellers. Prospective buyers will move on to another property if you will not allow your home to be shown at reasonable times. Best to board your animals at the kennel when you are not going to be home.

This morning my assistant called one agent 4 times trying to get an appointment on a listing for sale. The morning phone calls went like this:

1. Today's request DENIED because they want 24 hours notice (we called at 9 am for a 4 pm showing)

2. Tomorrow's request DENIED because it must be after 5.

3. Tomorrow's request DENIED because oops now it must be after 6.

(and buyer only has a sitter home till 6 pm)

4. Friday's request for any time before 12 noon DENIED because seller must be home to care for the large dogs in the house.

I didn't try a 5th time.

What does this say to a buyer? A seller (or seller's agent) who denies 4 appointments in a row, when I have a ready, willing and able buyer in hand is just a fool.

The best thing you can do when your house is on the market is make it READY TO SHOW. Keep it clean and neat to the best of your ability at all times, and don't turn down showings.

This seller lost out today. The buyer was discouraged that we could not get in. In fact, the image the seller (or agent) conveyed is that this house is hard to show, and so imagine how hard it will be if the buyer LIKES it and wants to make an offer? If the seller is this difficult on scheduling showings, how difficult will he/she be in negotiating and handling the deal?

Food for thought.

How To Get Rid of Stink Bugs

Good advice for home owners that are experiencing a problem with stink bugs. They appear to be out in force this month and are seeking a warm place to spend the winter.

The Loudoun County (VA) Extension Office has produced a fact sheet on the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, the invasive insect pest that is invading local homes.

The Extension Office offers tips on how to prevent the stink bugs from getting inside your home and also how best to deal with them if they do manage to get inside.

How to prevent them from getting inside: If a home or structure has a history of having stink bugs over- wintering inside, then preventative measures should be taken now to prevent re-infestation in the fall. Exclude stink bugs from the house by sealing up cracks around windows, doors, utility access points, chimneys, siding, trim, and fascia. Caulk can be used to seal many cracks, but attic and foundation vents, and weep holes will require wire mesh or screening. Do not seal cracks if the insects are already inside because they will be trapped and die indoors. How to control the bugs if they are inside: Caulk around baseboards, exhaust fans, light fixtures, and trim to prevent stink bugs from accessing interior rooms from basements, drop ceilings and attics. Vacuuming best controls individual insects. Spraying stink bugs with insecticide after they get inside still obligates your to vacuum up their dead bodies, so skip the insecticide and go straight to the vacuum. Avoid treating stink bugs you cannot reach with the vacuum with insecticide. If the stink bugs die inside the wall-voids or attic, their dead bodies may attract carpet beetles and other pests that feed on the carcasses and could lead to infestations of these pests.

Maryland foreclosure auctions are conducted at the county court houses when the secured mortgage lenders instruct the trustees under the deeds of trust to conduct trustee sales due to the defaults by mortgage borrowers. Interested buyers should be watching the advertisements for trustee sales in the coming weeks. The list below has been posted by Cohn, Goldberg, Deutsch.

Trustee sales are open to the public and homes for saleare available to all qualified bidders. Buyers should carefully read the newspaper advertisements that appear for three weeks before the sale date. Always check for cancellations before attending trustee sales. Seek professional advice if you do not have full knowledge of the risks. Since these transactions are not conditioned on the availability of mortgage financing, buyers should always have written pre-approval for financing with disclosure to the lender that the property is being purchased in 'as-is" condition.

The lenders are buying in most of the properties that are offered as homes for sale at the court house auctions.
