ActiveRain Practices: Deceased Members Designation

Newer members of ActiveRain may be surprised to discover that some of the blogs they might read are by members who are no longer alive. The names of deceased members also appear on the Leaderboard. If you die tonight, you may be remembered by your last blog so you may wish to make every blog you write reflect the way you wish to be remembered.

I would like to see some designation on the Leaderboard that shows that the member is deceased. Perhaps the word "Deceased" behind the name with a date if available would be a nice tribute and a way to recognize these members.

What are your suggestions for deceased members? Should there be a "deceased' designation?

Good morning, Roy Kelley yes.... that's a wonderful idea.... very respectful ..... and they deserve to be remembered....

I really like your suggestions Roy! A special designation for deceased members would serve two purposes

1. in memoriam

2. to make new members aware

Am just not fond of adding the word "deceased" behind the name. Perhaps a black ribbon across the corner of the profile pic (if that can be arranged), or adding a black star instead of the raindrop or ambassador symbol?

Good morning Roy. I like your line of thinking. Many who have passed still have applicable posts. Enjoy your day!

Saw the reblog and I think it is an excellent idea. I have been around here for a long time and I would like to know.

Good morning, Roy... I am in total agreement with your suggestion... hopefully the powers at AR will take it up. I also like your suggestion that we write each of our posts as if it's the last one... they will be our "legacy" at some point.

Roy, we do have members that have passed, and definitely want to remember them.  Great idea.

I came over this morning from Barbara Todaro 's reblog - I do think this is a good idea.

Good morning Roy. I too wrote about this some time ago to no avail. I think putting Emeritus after a members name would do it.

We may not be aware that the deceased's family or business partners are still receiving business from those blogs.  Designating them DECEASED may put a stop to those potential client calls.

Hi Roy Kelley - I like Andrea Bedard's suggestion "In Memorium". This is a respectful way to identify a contributor who has passed. Our names appear in blue, a compromise could be the name appears in black print instead of blue, or there could be a change of the "Rainmaker" or "Ambassador" symbol to be in black or a black diagonal through the symbol.  Better yet - make the symbol a Lilly.

Having that sort of designation would be a good thing.  Since I schedule blog posts out there is a chance that I will still be publishing posts after my death, haha.

Hello Roy - maybe ActiveRain Member Support would like to add this "responsibility" to their seemingly never-ending list of "things to do".

Imagine that outcry from people who discover a member who has been left off the appropriate section on the leaderboard or is mistakenly placed there.  And then there are people who get so upset at an omission from the Academy Awards when a celebrity turns up missing in the "In Memory" segment of the broadcast.

Maybe we need a legal opinion(or the Supreme Court) to weigh in with an opinion.  Ahh, unintended consequences.  Sorry to put a damper on the happy moment.

This is a wonderful suggestion, Roy. While I am not a fan of putting Deceased by the name, some sort of recognition (like the Black Ribbon mentioned) might be a good alternative.

Roy- I like the idea and it would be nice if some kind of designation were made. It shows appreciation and respect.

Kathy Streib

Thank you very much for your special recognition.

Have an outstanding week.

I think that if there was a classy way to make this designation with the utmost respect, that it would be a nice touch...and if staffing is the concern, I would happily volunteer some hours to that maintenance.

i hate the word 'deceased' but some designation would be probably good.  Thanks for suggesting this, Roy!

I have mixed feelings about this..not fond of "deceased" and Liz and Bill Spear made a good point. Seems to me this was raised some time ago and AR decided to make any changes.

It is a good reminder to all to think about how you want your social media profiles handled and by whom when you have left this earth.

Good morning Roy Kelley ,

Great discussion and I love Sheri Sperry - MCNE® I like the term "In Memorium"  Its a fitting tribute. If the family has family or business partners they usually change the name of the profile like Laura Cerrano did when her mom passed away. She's done a great job with her posts.

Roy, a great suggestion and I like some of the other member's suggestions as well.

I think that is a very thoughtful suggestion.  I wonder about a special place that members could write farewells to those that are gone, maybe one last blog post to honor them on their site.

We received a response:

ActiveRain Member Support

Management has been made aware of the request in the past and opted not to make any changes.  I don't see that position changing considering current staffing and priorities.

I agree that it's a good idea to differentiate the members, but apparently the hamsters disagree with you.  It's something to be hopeful for though, in the future.

Or maybe we can call them "cloud based members?"  Not trying to be funny, but something a little softer than deceased might be nice.  Love your thinking!  I see some people still having anniversaries on Linkedin and it's sad that their profiles are there, people congratulating them, and they are no longer alive :(
