I remember visiting a family member in Michigan.  The bottom of their car had quite a bit of damage from road salt.  We don't have that issue here in Sacramento.

We use cinders (small pieces of volcanic rock) to "sand" and "salt" our roads.  They work great, but do creat a lot of dust once the snow melts before the sweepers can clean up the roads.

This will be a very informative event and I hope that it is well attended and people heed the advice given.

Yay! I love to hear about cities being serious about reducing the mess and problems caused by salt on roads! Years ago, when I lived in IL this was a huge problem there too!

Roy Kelley - thanks for being a friend to the environment and promoting good information!

We certainly have a lot of snow and ice to deal with here in NH. I'm not sure how much salt is used but I know a lot of sand is used too.
