Complete Online Transactions at a Police Station in Montgomery County, MD

This message was provided by Officer Kim Jones at the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland.

With the increase of online transactions, the Montgomery County Police Department invites the public to use the parking lots and lobbies of our six Police District stations as a place for completing online transactions.  The goal of this program is to help reduce victimization and prevent illegal transactions.

There is no charge.  Additionally, no appointment or notification is needed.  Our officers are not allowed—nor is any member of the Department or County government—to act as a broker, mediator, witness, or be called on to officiate any transaction.  If an issue arises the parties are encouraged to contact the police.

This offer does not extend to transactions involving the sale of any contraband, stolen property, gun sales, or the sale of illegal items or prohibited services.

The Montgomery County Police Department offers the following safety tips:

  •               Always meet the buyer or seller in a public place that is well populated, well lit,                and preferably at one of the MCPD’s district stations.
  •               Tell a friend or family member where you’re going to meet someone and when                possible take a friend with you.
  •               Inform the buyer/seller that you will not be alone.
  •               Trust your instincts – if it sounds like a scam or too good to be true, it probably                 is.
  •               Do not invite strangers into your home.
  •               Know that counterfeit cashier’s checks and money orders are common. Banks                  may cash them and then hold you responsible for the money.
  •               Never give out any personal or financial information.

Roy, this is a good idea, but still would not meet a new customer in a parking lot.

Those are important tips, and an especially valuable service that is available at your police station.

Hi Roy- this is a good service to provide to your community. We've met buyers and sellers of online transactions (like Offer Up) at our local major grocery chain many times.
