When I posted this photograph on my Facebook timeline, I received the following comments from a Facebook friend in Dublin, Ireland:

Subhash Sharma  Although different tulip colours carry distinct meanings these tulips have a lovely story attached to them .It is said that a Turkish legend may be responsible for the red tulip's symbolism. The story goes that a prince named Farhad was love struck by a maiden named Shirin. When Farhad learned that Shirin had been killed, he was so overcome with grief that he killed himself - riding his horse over the edge of a cliff. It's said that a scarlet tulip sprang up from each droplet of his blood, giving the red tulip the meaning "Perfect love".

Roy Kelley I haven't been to Longwood in decades, but I remember it as spectacular.

I got a couple dozen of the most beautiful red tulips for Mothers Day from my boys. So enjoyed the day.

Good morning Roy. What a sad story. The tulips are beautiful but that poor horse died for nothing.

That is a wonderful story that was shared as a comment, I enjoy when people make comments that have more meaning than a standard reply.

Such an interesting story Roy. I really like tulips, and it's too bad they don't last a longer season!

Tulip blooms are a delightful harbinger of spring's arrival.  I love 'em. . .especially red ones.
