Maryland Blogger: Shopping for a Washer and Dryer

Shopping for a Washer and Dryer

Shopping for a Washer and Dryer

Chef Dolores asked to go shopping with her. She is looking for a new front loading washer and a gas dryer to replace our current equipment. This is definitely not my favorite kind of shopping. However, I did enjoy checking some early displays of spring flower bulbs.

Dolores is trying to make up her mind. The brands currently at the top of her list are LG and Samsung. Have you recently been through this process? What did you select?

Hi Roy,
The only time I ever seem to buyer a new washer/dryer set is whenever I move and that hasn't happened in over 14 years.  Let us know what you and chef (and laundress) Delores select.

Roy,

We select the model just below the one that has the zillion settings and gadgets.  We usually do a bit of research ahead of time...However, our appliances our humming along right now, so I have no idea.  All the best.  A

Appliance shopping is not a fun endeavor with all the choices out there. We purchased a Bosch washer & dryer, both running well ten years later. Very satisfied with their performance.

Appliance shopping isn't fun.  I had to replace several a couple years ago, when a power surge took out my old ones.  One thing that an appliance repairman told me was to not purchase LG or Samsung because they have more electronics in them, and aren't as easy to repair.  I did buy an LG dishwasher because I like the way it looked.  However, the old Kenmore that I did have lasted 27 years.  It had a substantial looking metal spring for the door.  This new LG had a thin nylon cord, which I doubt will make it more than 3 years.  It simply isn't put together as well as that ole Kenmore was.  I have a Samsung TV, and I like it.  However, it replaces a Samsung TV that only lasted 4 years before blowing up.

Take heed of what Myrl Jeffcoat says.  Today's appliances are made with too many electronics and they are designed to fail within 5 years or less.  It's all about selling you the extended warranty.  You'd be wise to have a repairman fix your old faithful washer and dryer!  We have had some bad experiences with the new ones and I have little faith in them.  Good luck!

Hi Roy - just last spring I had to replace ours.  We chose the LG.  Ours is top loading.  Love it.  It uses less water and has no agitator.

Lots of choices and different chains of stores have different features from manufacturers one has to be careful you are comparing apples and apples.

Hi Roy.  It's been a few years, but we bought the LG brand washer and dryer.  They have been working very well.

Hello Roy - I agree that major appliance shopping may rank slightly higher than a visit to the dentist. Not a favorite but a necessity. Hmm. . . does Best Buy offer complimentary lolli-pops?  Ah,Barbara Todaro's head may be spinning. Of course, no sugar and they won't be called complimentary but FREE!

We had a poor experience with a Samsung Refrigerator, and now have an LG refrigerator, dishwasher and will be buying a wall oven that is also LG. We are fans.

Hello Roy,  Sharon, my wife always has me go along for appliances and then she still has to research everthing.

I was telling Ray about your post yesterday - he said we've had ours now 12 years! Bosch front-loaders and they've been faithful, for sure!

One of my friends recently purchased a Samsung and the front glass exploded! Thankfully no one was in the room. We also have a neighbor who purchased Samsung as well and they have had nothing but, problems and Samsung won't replace them.

I have heard great things about the LG though.

Good luck with whatever you select!

Got a Samsung washer and dryer. Had a Fisher Paykel before that and a good ole Kenmore washer and dryer that is still probably running today, with the house we left it.

Chef Dolores selected a Samsung washer and gas dryer. She is now in the learning process with the new machines.

Dear Roy,

Both brands and pairs rate well on Consumber Reports, so you should be ok. Back to the whitest whites and most brilliant colors.

Most buildings in Manhattan don't permit W/D's within the apartment as the drain stack is not sufficient to accommodate the pressure that washing machines put out when draining. The building needs a minimum 3" drain stack before they can consider it. Replacing a drain stack in a building is a massive, difficult, time consuming, and expensive project. For 50-100 year old buildings- this is a huge undertaking.

For the fortunate few- then you have to find out whether the dryer can be vented or not (vented to the roof), and non-vented dryers don't dry as well.

These are conversations I have with buyers often.

I am on my second LG pair. the first I left with a home I sold.   No problems with either set.   When shopping for a W/D the choices are overwhelming.   I prefer less gadgetry on mine.    The first one was a front loader, now I have a top loader, gotta say I liked them both.
