Maryland Blogger: A Dahlia Named Pooh

A Dahlia Named Pooh

A Dahlia Named Pooh

I posted this photograph in the National Capital Dahlia Society Facebook group and one of my Facebook friends shared some of the history on this dahlia named Pooh. Click on the link to reach and join this group.

Ted Kennedy  Pooh is one of the most popular collarette dahlias and it wins many prizes in shows. It is easy to grow and if picked when there is almost no pollen showing in the pollen center, it will last a long time in a bouquet. The name "Pooh" is more in the vein of Winnie the Pooh and that name came from a shortened version of Winnipeg the city in Canada and a swan that was named "Pooh" . A website says"He told how Christopher Robin had given the swan the name "Pooh," explaining that “this is a very fine name for a swan, because if you call him and he doesn’t come (which is a thing swans are good at), then you can pretend that you were just saying ‘Pooh!’ to show him how little you wanted him."

That one is so unique and I would love to grow it. What an unusual name too.

One has to wonder what happy mood some divine spirit was in when it created the delightful design of that blossom.

As a Winnie the Pooh lifelong fan it is good to hear those words repeated.
