Longwood Gardens, in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, is one of the favorite day trip destinations for residents of Montgomery County, Maryland. One of the benefits of living in Gaithersburg is that we are within day trip distance of many very interesting places. Dolores and I are annual members of Longwood Gardens and we frequently visit.

What is now Longwood Gardens was originally purchased from William Penn in 1700 by George Peirce. In 1798, the Peirce family began to plant an arboretum and by 1850, they had one of the largest tree collections in the country.  It was named Peirce’s Park and was open to the public. Pierre S. du Pont purchased the property in 1906 and it became his private estate that he opened to the public on scheduled days during the year.

Mr. du Pont founded the Longwood Foundation in 1946 and left most of his estate for the maintenance and improvement of the gardens when he died in 1954. Longwood Gardens is open to the public and is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year. The gardens cover over 1,000 acres and the Conservatory is one of the largest that you will find anywhere.  The Conservatory covers over four acres.

Plan to spend the day when you visit. There is much to see. Dolores and I usually have lunch at the Café. You will want to to try the mushroom soup. This is mushroom country.

Good morning Roy. The mushroom soup sounds deleicious and the grounds sound inviting. Think it may take more than a day to take it all in! Enjoy your next visit.
