Prevent Hot Car Deaths

Very hot weather is forecasted and that means that the chances will increase for more hot car deaths. Over half of the children who die in hot cars are forgotten by their parents or caregivers. Many children die in hot cars after the gain access to the vehicles. Please be alert.

For Parents and Caregivers

Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, even for a minute.

Educate everyone who cares for your child about vehicle heating dynamics.

Make "Look Before You Lock" a routine.

Place a reminder in your vehicle to check the back seat at your destination.

Reduce risk by sticking to a routine and avoiding distractions.

Schedule a call as a reminder to ensure your child arrives at their destination, especially if your routine changes.

Ask your child care provider to call you if your child does not arrive as expected.

Ensure children do not have access to keys or key fobs.

Teach children vehicles are not play areas.

Immediately check vehicles if a child is missing.

Take action immediately if you see an unattended child in a vehicle.

Be an ambassador for child safety.

Good morning Roy - this is an important public service announcement.  I hope we don't hear of anything like this during the summer.

That's an important reminder, especially in hot weather months.  It's also important to remember pets as well as children.

This is good information, from a comment that I think you mistakenly made on my blog post earlier, I thought it was referencing an infographic for this post, but I guess not.

Hi Roy- it doesn't take long for a car to heat up and become dangerous. Let's hope that people read and heed this.

WONDERFUL and timely public service post, Roy. I am keenly aware of my surroundings when I get out of my car. This time of year, I'm also mindful of the cars around me - being sure there are no children left in them.

Have a great week, Roy!

Excellent reminder list, Roy, to prevent an awful tragedy.  That list should be printed and kept on every vehicle dashboard....  You do a wonderful job - in so many of your posts - of calling attention to ways to prevent a heartbreaking  tragedy.

Parks & Recreation Monthparksmonth
On July 2, Gaithersburg joined in the national celebration of Park and Recreation Month, an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association, with the issuing of an official Mayor and City Council proclamation. This year's theme, "A Lifetime of Discovery," challenges children and adults to explore the "undiscovered" roles of local parks and recreation. To celebrate, the City is offering a variety of unique programs and open houses throughout the month of July. Explore them all here.
