Maryland Blogger: Birthday Celebration at Rus Uz Russian and Uzbek Restaurant

Birthday Celebration at Rus Uz Russian and Uzbek Restaurant

Birthday Celebration at Rus UZ Russian and Uzbek Restaurant

We had a table for 20 for relatives from Maryland and Virginia and for our extended family members from Tajikistan at Rus Uz, a small Russian and Uzbek restaurant in Arlington, Virginia. We were celebrating the birthday of one of the children and the birthday of Zuhro Kholova, an Asian Kickboxing Confederation Champion from Tajikistan. We met Zuhro for the first time even though we have been friends on Facebook for years. Her sister, Sabina, is the wife of our nephew Tyler Kelley.

Sama was the appetizer selection for all at the table. Thinly rolled butter dough stuffed with seasoned dices of lamb, onions and spices, baked to a crisp. I loved them!

Dolores selected the Beef Stroganoff. Sauteed beef in a sour cream and tomato based sauce served with potatoes and steamed vegetables.

My selection for dinner was the Plov, the national dish of Uzbekistan. A flavorful rice dish mixed with carrots, chickpeas, raisins, spices and lamb.

We enjoyed sampling the Russian Beers. Baltika #5, #6 and #9. #9 was our favorite.

The Dulce de Leche birthday cake was the dessert. Wonderful!

Sounds like it was nice family event. Plov must be a dish similar to Pulav, an Indian  dish.

I love beef stroganoff, Roy... but a truly "pure" recipe for this dish does not include tomato sauce... just cream/sour cream sauce.

Sounds like a great time, Roy.  I just hope there wasn't any discussion about rigging the next election.

Roy, sounds like a wonderful celebration, and have not ever tried that cuisine, and should see if we have anything around here.

Sounds like you had a wonderful restaurant experience and delicious food.  In Hawaii, we often have for an appetizer - lumpia (lumpia/egg roll wrapper  with 2 tablespoons of cooked seasoned meat and vegetable fi!ling - rolled/wrapped and deep fried)... yummy Filipino appetizer. Roy, your Dahlia looks alive enough to feel the petals.
