Kentlands Historic Area
330 Firehouse Lane, Kentlands, Gaithersburg, MD
On my regular walks through the Kentlands community, I often wondered about the history of the interesting building at 330 Firehouse Lane. I thought that it was one of the original historic buildings in the community but noticed that it was not mentioned in articles that discussed the historical buildings. So, I decided to contact the architect that occupies the ground floor to ask about the history.
Mike Watkins of Michael Watkins Architect, LLC responded immediately. He explained that the lot was conveyed to him by Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zybeck, the Miami based architects and planners that were retained by the developers in 1988. Mike opened an office for them at 320 Firehouse Lane. The developer’s fee to the architects included the lots at 320 and 330 Firehouse Lane. Subsequently, one of the lots was conveyed to Mike.
Mike Watkins designed the building in which his office is now located and moved in, upstairs, in 1999. Three other tenants occupied the ground floor before Mike started his own firm in 2007.

Good morning Roy. Beautiful old building. I think I remember you writing about this building a few years back.
Hi Roy... that's a great looking building and how appropriate that it houses architects!
this is a beautiful building - thanks for sharing it with us - I love getting the history of old buildings around here
Good morning Roy. Have heard of Andres and Elizabeth, but not Mike. The developers chose wisely! Enjoy your day!
What a beautiful old building Roy. Thanks for sharing the story
That's a fine looking building Roy in Kentlands. Nice learning about it's history...
Roy, I remember you posting about this building before, and you are right it truly is beautiful.
Roy,
What a lovely building and I enjoyed reading the history of it. It is fitting that it is occupied by architects. A
Roy,
Great looking firehouse and the history was cool! I hope you and Delores enjoy a wonderful day!
What a cool old building - thanks for the bit of history about it. Old Firehouses are one of my favorite buildings to see - many in Portland now house restaurants, or other trendy shops such as cannabis dealers. Talk about going up in smoke...;)
That seems like a likely location for attorney offices, Roy. Since, they are in the business of trying to put out fires!
Attorneys have some of the best old offices. I am glad you have such beautiful buildings in the Kentlands.
Roy Kelley , I reread your post two times...I felt this looked like a historic building of perhaps a few centuries back. However, it was just built in the late 1900's? It is absolutely a treasure of a structure. Beautiful!
Your feedback is always welcome and is very much appreciated.
