Maryland Blogger: Photowalking at the United States National Arboretum

Photowalking at the United States National Arboretum

Photowalking at the United States National Arboretum

Spring is a good time for photowalking and it a perfect time to visit the United States National Arboretum in northeast Washington, DC, fronting on the Anacostia River.

Many visitors miss the opportunity to spend some time at one of the most attractive locations in the District.  With 446 acres, the Arboretum is larger than might be expected.  A map is available at the Visitor Center.  There are miles of trails and roads that allow access to the many gardens.

This week is a good time to see the Azalea Collections which include over 15,000 azaleas on the south side of Mount Hamilton.  Take a trail to the top of Mount Hamilton, at 240 feet, for a view of the United States Capitol, only 2 miles to the west.

You will want so spend some time with this visit.  Go in the morning, pack a lunch, and enjoy many hours in a wonderful location.  Make sure you have your camera in hand, with an extra battery, for an ideal photowalking opportunity.

The address is 3501 New York Avenue NE, Washington, DC. Admission is free.

That would have been nice to see last week but there just wasn't enough time. The rain also stood in our way. Maybe next time.

Roy,

We are enjoying your photo walk immensely!  Have you been to the Bonsai Pavillion, it is named after Ron's Bonsai teacher, John Naka.  I had a chance to meet him, and he was a wonderful teacher beloved by his students.  It is on our evergrowing list.  A

Stunning flowers Roy! I love the orange one - looks like a CA poppy. Such a happy flower!

I love azaelias.  Mine outdid themselves this year, but have all lost their blossoms now!

I'm reading the comment by Ron and Alexandra Seigel about Bonsai.  I use to belong to a Bonsai club years ago.  I had quite a collection too.  But, don't any longer.

Roy,

Just want to let Myrl Jeffcoat know that Ron is down to 2.  He had a beautiful bougainvillea bonsai with a very thick trunk, which we move to Napa from LA.  We tried to keep it alive in a greenhouse, but it did not make it...I would love to see your photos if you have them...John Naka's bonsais were amazing.  A
