Blanket Flower, Gaillardia, Kentlands Photowalk  IMG 5553

This Gaillardia or Blanket Flower was photographed during one of my photowalks through Kentlands, our home community within the City of Gaithersburg, Maryland 20878. These are long blooming plants for hot sunny gardens and bloom through much of the summer and early autumn.

This flower is part of the sunflower family and was named after M. Gaillard de Charentonneau, an 18th century French magistrate who was a patron of botany. The common name may refer to the brightly patterned blankets made by native American Indians. In Europe the Blanket Flower may be said to be named for the colors of Mexican blankets.
