ActiveRain Wallpaper: Nandina domestica 'firepower'

Dick Greenberg is sponsoring a November contest titled AR Contest - Show us Your Wallpaper as an effort to encourage members of ActiveRain to share their personal selection of wallpaper for one of their devices or sites. He is hoping to find some good stories.

When I was young, photography was one of my hobbies and those were the days of long hours in the darkroom developing black and white photographs. We purchased government surplus film and supplies and rolled our own canisters of 35 mm film.

As I approached my time to retire from real estate, Dolores suggested that I return to photography as a hobby that would keep me busy during our retirement years. She did not want me interfering with her golf games or her time for traveling or playing cards with her friends.

Before getting a new camera, my daily habit was to take a morning walk through our home community, Kentlands in Gaithersburg, Maryland. When I began to carry a camera, some of the most available subjects were the flowers and plants that I passed during my walks which quickly became photowalks.

We have also spent more time visiting public gardens such as Longwood Gardens and Brookside Gardens. After taking over 100,000 photographs of flowers and plants, that has become my niche in photography.

I enjoy the changing colors of the season and selected this photograph of Nandina leaves for the cover of my ActiveRain site. If you wish to see more of my photographs, follow my Facebook timeline or visit my Facebook photo albums. I also post photographs on Pinterest and Flickr.

Good morning Roy,

When the better half wants her time we shall give it to them.

Maybe it is time to get the old Leica out of the box!

Make yourself a great day.

Good morning Roy Kelley ,

Thanks for a peek into how you got back into photography! Love the photo. Dolores sounds like a friend of mine who when her husband retired told him retirement would be a wonderful thing if he would follow 3 simple rules: Don't ask where I'm going, Don't park behind me and Don't ask me what is for lunch! LOL!!

Good Morning Roy,

Your attention to detail and passion for photography has been an inspiration to me over the years. I think it's wonderful that Dolores encouraged you to go back to something you love while she continues on with her routine hobbies. And through it all, you support each other and share your interests. You're a great couple whom I am proud to know via ActiveRain.

Hi Roy - That's an excellent choice for a wallpaper, and a great photo. I really like the balance of tectures and colors. Thanks for your entry!

That's a great story, Roy. I'm sure glad you got back into photography. I really enjoy your photographs. I remember taking a class and learning to roll my own film. Did you ever think photography would get to the level it has today with no film and no processing. Now everyone shares online.

Hi Roy -- 100,000 photos is quite impressive.   You can "change" your wallpaper multiple times a day and never repeat an image.  Your selection is quite appealing.
