When to stop for a school bus in Maryland

While school has been in session for nearly two months, Maryland drivers seem to need a refresher course on the laws surrounding stopped schools buses.

Do drivers have to stop if they’re on a divided highway and a school bus has stopped with its lights on?  Answer: Yes, if there is no median. Traffic in both directions must stop.

The Maryland Department of Transportation has reminders about the basic rules of the road, including how to drive safely around school buses. Breaking the law can cost a driver a $570 fine and a three-point penalty on their drivers license.

What to Do When Approaching a School Bus

  • When a school bus stops, the flashing red lights go on and the stop sign flaps come out, drivers in BOTH directions are required to stop. This is the most dangerous time with children getting on or off the bus.
  • It is against the law to pass a stopped school bus with its flashing red lights activated and stop arm extended.
  • Never pass on the right side of the bus, where children enter or exit. This is illegal and can have tragic results.
  • Two-lane road: When a school bus stops for passengers, all traffic in both directions, must stop.
  • Two-lane road with center turn lane: When a school bus stops for passengers, all traffic in both directions, must stop.
  • Four-lane road without a center median: When a school bus stops for passengers, all traffic in both directions, must stop.
  • Divided highway of four lanes or more with a center median: When a school bus stops for passengers, only traffic following the bus must stop.

Yep this is good news/advice that needs to be followed. You have to drive with caution around a school bus too many kids not paying attn and last thing you want is to have a problem that could have been avoided

Roy this is such an important post. I can't tell you how many times I see drivers NOT stopping for school bus. The fines are high and the consequences deadly of kids if drivers don't follow the laws.

The rules are similar in California when it comes to stopping for school buses.

I have seen so many people ignore these laws Roy, it is a real risk for children.

Roy, this is so very important for the safety of those on the school bus and many people are in such a hurry that I've seen them ignore the rules!
