Teaching Kids How to Walk Safely

Teaching Kids How to Walk Safely

School starts next week in Montgomery County, Maryland!

If your child walks to school, now would be a good time to review with her/him how to safely walk to school.  The below tips are provided by our partners in safety SafeKids.

  • Teach kids at an early age to look left, right and left again before crossing the street. Then remind them to continue looking around until safely across.
  • It’s always best to walk on sidewalks or paths and cross at street corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.
  • Teach kids to make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.
  • Children under 10 need to cross the street with an adult. Every child is different, but developmentally, most kids are unable to judge the speed and distance of oncoming cars until age 10.
  • Encourage kids to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up.
  • Teach kids not to run or dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
  • If kids are walking when it’s dark out, teach them to be especially alert and make sure they are visible to drivers. Have them wear light- or brightly-colored clothing and reflective gear.

Roy Kelley Thanks for sharing child safety notice from  Montgomery County Fire & Rescue.  Reminds me of my early days as inner-city teacher, before real estate career.  So important to teach safety.

Roy, All of those points are excellent ones to teach children and in fact some adults could use a refresher course!! Recently I saw a 6-7 year old pushing a baby buggy with child in the middle of the street and he just ran right in front of traffic. The elderly  slow moving grandmother was far behind!! Scary and total stupidity.. Not the childs fault.

This is great information to share. We all love our kids and don't want to see any harm come to them. Educating them on what they need to know will help them get along safely.

I love this post! When I was in Switzerland the school had a program to teach young kinds how to go to school. It was quite fascinating to watch how the children marched in line with adults assigned to every group of kids. The kids also had safety vests. I remember saying, I wish they implemented something like that here in the United States. That was several years ago. Now I'm reading your post and I'm so happy! Let hope it will be a safe year for all!

Roy- what a timely post.  We have to stay on top of our children with regards to their safety.  And we have to keep telling them!

Absolutely great (and timely) suggestions for kids, Roy Kelley.  We were walking with our little grandbabies last weekend and having a talk much like this with them.  Thank you so much for sharing this ...

Safety first of course! It's strange how we forget that we have to teach kids these things.
