Bicycle Master Plan

On roadways throughout the City of Gaithersburg, motorists might notice graphic images of bicycles with two chevron arrows above them. These lane markings, or "sharrows," do not indicate a dedicated biking lane; rather, they alert motorists and bicyclists to the fact that the cyclists may be sharing the full driving lane. Along with the sharrows, these roadways have signs indicating that "Bikes May Use Full Lane." Cyclists are also accommodated on roads with dedicated bike lanes and on multiuse paths with widths generally greater than eight feet. Learn more about Gaithersburg's Bicycle Master Plan here

This is a City of Gaithersburg announcement.

Hi Roy -- well, that's a new word for me -- thanks for sharing "sharrows" with us today.

Roy, I never knew that is what they were called. We live in a city with many bikers and runners. Thanks for sharing!

I did not know this word before now. I think I know what you mean though. I do classes in Panama City Beach and Destin, both of which have tons of cyclists, so I'm used to them being on the roads.

Ok, I Googled it to get a visual. I know exactly what you are talking about.

I never heard this Roy. I do hear about more and more communities becoming bicycle friendly though.

During all the years I've shuffled around this planet, I don't believe I've heard the word, "sharrows" before.  I've learned something new today!

What is a "sharrows"?

Sharrow is short-form for "shared lane bicycle marking". This pavement marking includes a bicycle symbol and two white chevrons and is used to remind motorists that bicyclists are permitted to use the full lane. There are no striped bicycle lanes on streets marked with sharrows. However, with or without marked sharrows, bicyclists are encouraged to travel on streets and follow traffic laws just as any other vehicle on the road. This includes bicyclists avoiding riding on sidewalks.

Hi Roy Kelley ,  I have not heard that word yet, and I have not seen the sign, but I'm sure it's comming soon.

Roy - the name is totally new to me.  We have a bike club that goes as a group on the road.  It is usually Sunday mornings.

I have never seen this sign or heard of the name.  What a great post.  Area residents  (especially bikers) or new to the area residents will really appreciate the education!
