Active Rain Practices: Reporting Spam Comments

The question is what to do when we find spam messages in blog comments. Should we report the spam and then delete it? Don’t be too quick to delete spam comments based on the following advice.

Bob Stewart’s advice on reporting spam:  “If you report the spam, when we confirm it, we are able to block the IP address. This only works if you just report it. If you report then delete, we do not block the IP address.

So it's up to you. We generally go through twice per day and clean up the spam (except on the weekends, where we don't get to them until Monday morning) so it shouldn't sit there for too long.”

Roy, thank you on the information on reporting spam comments. Hey, sort of an overcast day today and the very pretty yellow flower plays well in lifting the spirits. Have a wonderful day, Roy.

I've seen quite a few spam posts made, but I don't often see many comments.

I'm glad you did this post to let others know what they should do when they get spam on their post. Leave it there. AR will delete it when they get to it and have blocked the IP address. Nice post, Roy.

Roy,

This is a good message to get out, I did see that and did report a spam not sure what happened!

I generally report it when I see it.  I wish there was someone who could help delete them on the weekends (e.g. may a member volunteer).  I'd be happy to help.

And not to forget, you'll receive a few points for reporting spam comments!

Good post Roy Kelley.  I didn't realize deleting a spam comment prevented AR from blocking the IP address.

Posted by Jill Murty, Realtor - Orange County, CA (PREA Realty) over 1 year ago

Roy I learned along the way to report it but not to delete it. Good to get the word out again and again so the guys/gals can keep this place spam free!

I wasn't aware how that procedure worked.   Knowing NOT to delete is important information.

Good to know - but then will AR delete the spammer's comment or do I need to go back in a few days to do it (after everyone has received their points for reporting the spam comment :) )

I forget how I did it, but you can go in to your account somehow and block the ability for anonymous posts. It cuts down on the spam comments almost 100%.

I like this system.  I try to report anytime I see these dastardly spammer comments.

WE need to report spam even if the chance of additional points is not likely

I reported a spammer two days ago. She had just joined AR. Now she's gone. Good riddance!

Thanks for pointing this out, Roy.  And, if I may add: I don't think it does any good to comment on these spam posts or questions as it just shows the spammer that it's been read.

You can delete and mutter Roy Kelley sends his best or leave it to Bob Stewart  who will have it for spam breakfast. Either way, it is toast

I always report it. I think Activerain has done a great job of stopping some of this.

Posted by Margaret Woda, Maryland Real Estate & Military Relocation (Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc.) over 1 year ago

I always leave it, pretty sure most spammers do not have a static IP since it is their business to post as much as possible, but every bit helps.

I report every time. Sometimes I see someone who has joined AR just to deliver a sales pitch and not the institutional scammers. Those bother me the most.

Posted by Joe Pryor, REALTOR® - Oklahoma Investment Properties (The Virtual Real Estate Team) over 1 year ago

I do it all the time & get points for it. They clean up right away!

Posted by Lyn Sims, Schaumburg IL Area Real Estate (RE/MAX Suburban) over 1 year ago

We also have little incentive Roy Kelley - 5 points per spam (I think there is a daily limit on that,)

Irrespective of anything, you have shared what is the best course of action if we see the spam.
