Historic John Poole House, Poolesville, Maryland
Residents of Poolesville, in Montgomery County, Maryland love the small town atmosphere of the community which is unique in the busy urban suburbs of Washington, DC. Visitors to Poolesville also discover some interesting American history.
The John Poole House and General Store is the oldest structure in the community and original one room log cabin dates back to 1793. It served as a home, general store and trading post. The structure was enlarged several times and also served as the first post office, from 1810, in the community.
The John Poole house is located at 19923 Fisher Avenue, Poolesville, MD 20837 and now serves as an interpretive museum and gift show. The room behind the merchandise store houses a display of Civil War Artifacts.
Dolores and I visited Poolesville during the 15th Annual Montgomery County Heritage Days weekend, presented by Heritage Montgomery. The annual Heritage Days weekend is designed to develop tourism while protecting and promoting the cultural, historical and natural resources of Montgomery County.

Roy, thanks for sharing the beautiful photographs and the history of John Poole House, Poolesville Maryland. Happy & Safe July 4th.
Roy, I really enjoyed this history lesson complete with great photos of the Poolesville House. You and Dolores are really getting around these days! Enjoy life my friend...
I think local history should be more of a focus in elementary school. It really is so interesting. The little log cabin reminds me of the one that used to be on the property next to my grandmothers home. It is now located in Gladwin for others to enjoy. Happy Fourth of July.
Great information about a home with historical significance, Roy. Have a very happy 4th of July =)

Roy: A slice of Americana preserved for the rest of us to enjoy. By the looks of your photos, you and Dolores had a nice visit.
Roy, We have a similar structure here that's the oldest working General Store in the Country and enjoy our visits there, just like anyone in the Maryland area will enjoy the John Poole House!
Wow! 1783!?!?!? Those are really neat pictures. The old tools are really cool and they used great ingenuity when design them. (Bet they would have loved one of our modern houses though.)
Good morning Roy,
Dropping back by to wish you and Dolores a very safe and happy Independence Day my friend. Make it a great day in all you do and I'm sure you'll keep your camera close at hand!
Good morning to all. Enjoy the Independence Day celebrations with your camera in hand.

Hey, Roy! I included this post in Last Week's Favorites. Have a great week.
Thanks, Pat, for including this blog on your list of favorites. Positive recognition is always appreciated.
Really great photos Roy. I've been living in Montgomery County all my life and have known of Poolesville - but never knew there was an actual Poole that it was named after. I just remembered that years ago it was the favorite place for police officers to buy a house to live in.
Thanks, Debbie, for stopping by. Poolesville is a favorite community for many home buyers that are seeking a small town atmosphere.
It is interesting to learn about the history of Montgomery County.
