Have You Done Something Good In The World Today?

There is a song that I love that goes like this:

Have I done any good in the world today?
Have I helped anyone in need?
Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad?
If not, I have failed indeed.

Has anyone’s burden been lighter today
Because I was willing to share?
Have the sick and the weary been helped on their way?
When they needed my help was I there?

After reading the fantastic post put up by Liz & Bill Spear, I felt the need to reflect on my actions of the day. Had I helped someone? Had I helped to fill the needs of someone that could not help themselves? Had I made life better for those around me?

It does not need to be something huge, or some grand gesture to let the world know how good and wonderful you are, that defeats the purpose. Charity and honest affection for your fellow human beings is not about who can make the biggest splash and get noticed the most by doing good deeds. It is about the quiet moments of kindness and simple, unacknowledged goodness that make a life better because it was touched by them.

It's about lifting those around you when they are too weary to take another step, be it physical or emotional. It's about taking a moment to talk to that kid at the pool that drives everyone crazy by asking a million questions. . . . probably because he's lonely. Or about smiling at the massive, scary, tattooed biker guy in the gas station aisle even though your knees turn to jelly. . . . because maybe he's having a rough day and could use a friendly smile. (Yes, big, scary biker dudes have bad days too!) Or maybe it's paying for the car behind you at the drive through at Arby's, or dropping off some school supplies at a local charity.

It's does not really matter what you do, so long as you just do it. And sorry, but this is not a "it's the thought that counts" type of deal.

Actions speak volumes louder than words. What do your actions say about you?

Georgetown's Old Stone House

Georgetown's Old Stone House: 3051 M Street NW

There are plenty of wonderful houses for sale in Georgetown, but this is not one of them!

In 1765, Christopher Layman, moved down to Georgetown from Pennsylvania and started construction on this house. But he died a year later with only the first floor complete. The second owner, a stylish widow named Cassandra Chew, added the second and third floors. It's built out of locally quarried granite

Legend has it that George Washington stayed there while laying plans for the new federal city that would bear his name. And that legend probably saved the place from the wrecking ball.

In 1807, Mrs. Chew bequeathed the building to her daughter, and it remained in the family until 1875, with the owners living above the shop. Throughout its history, it served as a tavern, watchmaker's shop, milliner's, and, by the mid 1900's, it was a used car lot!

How unchic!

In the 1950's the National Park Service came to the rescue. They restored the house and transformed the car lot to an English garden.

It's now a museum, open free to the public between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm between Wednesday and Sunday.

While the Old Stone House is not currently on the market, there are 62 other Georgetown homes for sale! They range from a low of $470,000 for a tiny one-bedroom to $19,500,000 for Halcyon House, an amazing historic estate. But there is a whole lot in between. Trustee sales auctions are open to the public and all qualified bidders. These sales are foreclosures by the secured mortgage lenders. Buyers should carefully read the newspaper advertisements that appear for three weeks before the sale date. The required deposits must be in the form of cash or certified funds. Most of the bidders use cashier's checks that are payable to themselves and endorse the checks when they are successful. Always check for cancellations before attending trustee sales. Seek professional advice if you do not have full knowledge of the risks. Since these transactions are not conditioned on the availability of mortgage financing, buyers should always have written pre-approval for financing with disclosure to the lender that the property is being purchased in 'as-is" condition. Normally, the properties are not offered for inspection.

There is competition for homes for sale at trustee sale auctions. The secured mortgage lenders are buying in most of the properties that are sold at the court house auctions. Harvey West Auctions, Auctioneers conducts trustee sales at the county court house entrance.

Trustee sales auctions are open to the public and all qualified bidders. These sales are foreclosures by the secured mortgage lenders. Buyers should carefully read the newspaper advertisements that appear for three weeks before the sale date. The required deposits must be in the form of cash or certified funds. Most of the bidders use cashier's checks that are payable to themselves and endorse the checks when they are successful. Always check for cancellations before attending trustee sales. Seek professional advice if you do not have full knowledge of the risks. Since these transactions are not conditioned on the availability of mortgage financing, buyers should always have written pre-approval for financing with disclosure to the lender that the property is being purchased in 'as-is" condition. Normally, the properties are not offered for inspection.

There is competition for homes for sale at trustee sale auctions. The secured mortgage lenders are buying in most of the properties that are sold at the court house auctions. No, I'm not asking you to.

You can, of course, if you wish and feel it's deserved, but that's not the point.

If you are on LinkedIn (you are, aren't you? It's your on-line professional resume. If you're not you'd better get there), you no doubt know about recommendations. You likely have some, and probably have shared a few as well.

You can request that someone endorse you, perhaps with the hope they will reciprocate

Or you can be proactive and recommend someone without them asking (how cool is that?)

According to LinkedIn, "A Recommendation is a comment written by a LinkedIn user to advocate a colleague, business partner, or provider of a professional service including service providers who are not LinkedIn."

Who doesn't like to get a recommendation that will be in the public eye?! We all like to be endorsed by others, don't we?

But what happens when you get a request, such as the one I got today... "Will you endorse me?" It was from someone I have connected with - I know the company, have seen this person on-line, but admittedly do not know them well enough to feel that I can truly endorse them. No offense, I just don't have the info to be specific and heart-felt.

There are plenty of folks I know who I could endorse but simply have not done so. My bad, since I don't have a good excuse. But they deserve it and I would recommend them without reservation.

Would you endorse someone who asks if you don't know them well, or perhaps not at all, other than the fact that you have connected on-line?

Do you make recommendations in order to, perhaps, get one in return?

Do you ask people to recommend you, even if you don't truly know them?



Is this age of the Internet and social media, where on-testimonials, likes, friending, and being connected are so highly prized, one has to wonder...are these attributions and connections becoming diluted?

Do people take them seriously or is it becoming part of the social media game?
