Book Recommendation: Love in the Driest Season by Neely Tucker

Love in the Driest Season (2004) is a family memoir by American author Neely Tucker. This is the personal story of foreign correspondent Neely Tucker and his wife Vita, while living in Zimbabwe and the challenges of adopting an abandoned baby girl, Chipo. You will also want to read the Sully Carter novels by this author. Click on the links to learn more about the author and his books.

"Neely Tucker writes nonfiction by day at the The Washington Post, where he has been a staff writer for sixteen years, and is currently assigned to cover the 2016 U.S. Presidential campaign. He writes fiction by night at his house, where it isn’t frowned upon to have a friendly glass of bourbon by the keyboard."

Goodreads Review of Love in the Driest Season, A Family Memoir

"In 1997 foreign correspondent Neely Tucker and his wife, Vita, arrived in Zimbabwe. After witnessing the devastating consequences of AIDS and economic disaster on the country’s children, the couple started volunteering at an orphanage where a critically ill infant, abandoned in a field on the day she was born, was trusted to their care. Within weeks, Chipo, the baby girl whose name means “gift,” would come to mean everything to them. Their decision to adopt her, however, would challenge an unspoken social norm: that foreigners should never adopt Zimbabwean children."
