Kentlands Photowalk: Chinese Chives, Allium tuberosum IMG 5670

Kentlands Photowalk: Chinese Chives, Allium tuberosum IMG 5670

Chef Dolores likes to have a supply of Chinese chives in our home garden because she uses them in recipes. They are also fun to photograph. You have to be careful during their early grown because the can easily be mistaken for grass that needs to be pulled.

Do you grow Chinese chives in your home garden?

Subhash Sharma These fresh looking Chinese chives (Allium tuberosum) also known as Chinese leek. Oriental  garlic,Garlic chives and its Chinese name of kow choin are a native of Asian species of onion native to the Nepal, Bhutan, India and some Chinese provinces. It is grown and used as a substitute to garlic and onion in cooking and is known as "maroi nakupi". In Japanese it is known by the name of "green nira grass" where "nira". Both leaves and the stalks and immature, unopened flower buds are used as a flavoring in a similar way to chives, scallions or garlic and are used as a stir fry ingredient. In China, they are often used to make dumplings with a combination of egg, shrimp and pork. They are a common ingredient in Chinese jiaozi dumplings and the Japanese and Korean equivalents. The flowers may also be used as a spice. In Vietnam, the leaves of garlic chives are cut up into short pieces and used as the only vegetable in a broth with sliced pork kidneys.

Mr. Sharma is a Facebook friend from India. He now lives in Ireland and frequently comments on my photographs as they are posted on Facebook.
