Kentlands Photowalk: Joe Pye Weed, Eutrochium purpureum IMG 5064

I enjoy photographing plants and flowers while photowalking through Kentlands, our home community in Gaithersburg, Maryland 20878. Frequently, I do not know the correct names. This plant was over six feet tall and was growing in front of a white picket fence. I had to go to a plant identification group on Facebook for name assistance.

This is Joe Pye Weed, Eutrochium purpureum. It is also known as gravel root or trumpet weed and is a herbaceous perennial plant in the sunflower family.

Kentlands is a favorite area for a home purchase by families relocated to the Metro Area of Washington, DC.

Subhash Sharma  These fresh looking 'Joe-Pye weeds' (Eutrochium species) come from a Genus of about 42 species of the sunflower family with purple or white-flowered plants. They are named after Joe Pye (Jopi in the Native tongue), an Indian healer from New England, used E. purpureum to treat a variety of ailments like the kidney stones and urinary tract ailments which led to the name Joe-Pye weed for these plants. Folklore says that Joe Pye used this plant to cure fevers and also that American colonists used this plant to treat typhus outbreaks.

Mr. Sharma is a Facebook friend from India. He currently lives in Ireland and frequently comments on the photographs I post on Facebook.
